Her Triumph,

Book Four of the Laura's Dash Series

"...Taken together, these four novels are a tour de force chronicling the plight of one woman, while holding up a magnifying glass for us to evaluate our history and our societal ills. Darrow pulls no punches, but offers a starkly beautiful tribute to a life well lived."

         M. L. Hamilton

Her Triumph is the fourth and last book in the Laura’s Dash Series. The first book covered Laura's hardscrabble upbringing and her escape from a vicious, abusive father. In the second book, we followed her life as an adult, wife, and mother coping with the Great Depression. The third book brought new challenges when Laura's husband had a mental breakdown and was committed to an insane asylum, leaving Laura to fend for herself and her children alone. In Her Triumph we share Laura’s struggles to raise her children to adulthood in a world with little respect or resources for families torn apart by hardships beyond their control, and her anguish and pain when the country is again caught up in war in both Korea and World War II. Her Triumph chronicles Laura’s children’s growth into strong, successful adults inspired by their mother’s love and example. And we see Laura, after years of selfless struggle, finally able to find confidence in herself and her gifts.

Reviews:

Her Triumph is the final novel in the Laura Dash Series and takes Laura through the lowest moments of her life to her final triumph as a wife and a single mother during the Depression era. The novel begins where the previous one left off, finding Laura in the most precarious position for a single mother during any period in history—providing for one’s children when there is no work to be had. Complicating the matter is the time in which Laura finds herself living, a time that believed every woman had a man providing for her—a cruel hoax that was never true.

In a stark contrast between wealthy and poor, Laura seeks help from the worst sort of hypocrite, the one who believe she is doing right, but does more harm than good. Realizing she’s been gulled, Laura tries desperately to right the wrong. The consequences are as raw and agonizing as they are real.

Darrow has a particular strength in writing pathos that makes you feel it in your soul because we’ve all been Laura at some point in our lives—making choices out of desperation that have resounding consequences, but the true life stakes are what make Laura’s determination and grit all the more satisfying.

This is an amazing story of a strong and resilient woman's love for her children. I admire the bravery and courage she exhibited, no matter what life handed her. I especially loved that her mother's love and spiritual guidance strengthened her. It was difficult to put this book down, for I kept wondering how she would keep the family bond going, despite all the hardships she went through. This is a heartwarming and feel-good book.

Laura's journey through life was not an easy one. Tough decisions were made out of love and for the safety of her family. The authors description of places and events will leave you wanting more and praying for the best. I loved my own thought provoking journey through this series. Worth reading.
